Music Education Foundation

mef logoMEF is committed to working with D-41 to help support all their music programs. To get you and some of our new members better acquainted with MEF, I thought I’d cover some of the things MEF supports and how we fund these. MEF’s “Music for All” program supports students having financial need (they need to qualify for the milk program) with year-round instrument rental, a music stand, and books. We currently have 27 students in this program.

We have a Bass Scholarship which provides financial assistance for students renting a bass. The bass is about double the rent of most instruments, so we provide the difference. MEF has always allowed for eight scholarships, but this year, because of the tough economic times, we have approved 12 bass scholarships.

MEF gives scholarships to all students who apply to summer camp. Last year we had a record year of 61 students. MEF budgets and then divides among all applicants. Last year each student received a $100 scholarship. In previous years, students have received up to $200 each. Each year, five students from band, choir and orchestra receive outstanding director’s awards. This award includes a monetary award for their summer camp or lessons. This usually ranges from $1500-$1700.

MEF purchases items that help enhance our programs. In looking over the purchases over the last six years, some of the items have included: vests and jackets used for performances, rack and bags to store them in, dry cleaning, electronic keyboard and amplifier and drum set for the jazz band, replacement bars for elementary school xylphones, musical costumes and small instruments for elementary schools, basses and celli for orchestra, timpani, clarinet, and bassoon for band, racks for violins and celli, alto recorder and CD player and stools for chorus, glockenspiel and bass metalophones for elementary, fabric for madrigal costumes, musser orchestra bells for band, pianos (including the new baby grand at Hadley), speaker and microphones for recording and other items. MEF has provided on average over the last 10 years, over $14,000 per year for these programs and purchases.
